The department offers 3 majors:and Mathematis-Economics.

Economics

Required Courses:

EC 101 Economic Issues and Policy

EC 102 Principles of Economics

EC 306 Microeconomics

EC 307 Macroeconomics

EC 338 Econometrics

EC 400 Senior Seminar in Economics

* An additional four Economics courses at the 300- or 400- level

* One course in statistics

Suggested Course Sequencing:

The department recommends taking Econ 101 and 102 during the first year; Econ 306 and 307 and a statistics course during the second year; and upper-division electives during the junior and senior years.

Students must take Econ 338 before Econ 400 (which is taken in the spring of the senior year) and must take a statistics course before taking Econ 338. Students therefore should take statistics no later than their sophomore year.

Economics & Organizational Management

Required Courses:

EC 101 Economic Issues and Policy

EC 102 Principles of Economics

EC 202 Intro to Organizational Management

EC 211 Financial Accounting

EC 306 Microeconomics

EC 307 Macroeconomics

EC 240 Business and Society or EC 327 Organizational Theory

EC 400 Senior Seminar in Economics or EC 401 Senior Seminar in Strategic Management

* An additional three courses, one of which must be outside the Department of Economics: any course at the 200-level or above in Economics; PSY 205; REL 280; POL 360; POL 421; SOC 301

* One course in statistics

Suggested Course Sequencing:

The department recommends taking Econ 101 and 102 during the first year, and Econ 202 during the second year.

The ideal timing of the other courses is more flexible, but students must take Econ 306 and the statistics course before taking Econ 401 (which is taken in the spring of the senior year). Students also typically benefit from fulfilling the specific requirements (Econ 306, 307, and 211) before taking upper-division electives.

Mathematics-Economics

Required Courses:

EC 101 Economic Issues and Policy

EC 102 Principles of Economics

EC 306 Microeconomics

EC 307 Macroeconomics

MA 118 Calculus I

MA 119 Calculus II

MA 206 Linear Algebra

MA 220 Multivariable Calculus

MA 309 Differential Equations

EC 338 Econometrics or MA 328 Mathematical Statistics and Probability

EC 400 Senior Seminar in Economics or MA 480 Mathematics Seminar

* An additional two courses in Mathematics or Economics (at the 200-level or higher, and excluding EC 211 and EC 212) with at least one course in Economics.

Suggested Course Sequencing:

The department recommends taking Econ 101 and 102 and Calculus during the first year; Econ 306 and 307 and additional math courses during the second year; and upper-division courses during the junior and senior years.

Interested students should talk with a faculty member in both departments about optimal sequencing of courses.

Students who wish to receive credit for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or economics coursework at other colleges should consult with the department chair. Students who have earned a 4 or 5 on the AP Micro or Macro exam or a 5, 6, or 7 on the IB exam may start in Econ 102 (skipping Econ 101 and earning 4 hours of credit). Student with a 4 or 5 on the AP Micro and Macro exams may start in Econ 306 and Econ 307 (skipping Econ 101 and 102 and earning 8 hours of credit). Students who have taken economics courses at another college may start the economics course sequence in a higher course than EC 101 with the written permission of the department chair.
